I am responding on behalf of Ambassador Richardson regarding your February 18, 1997 letter concerning the conflicts in Myanmar.
In December of 1996, the 51st United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus a strongly-worded human rights resolution on Burma calling for the release of all political prisoners and urged the establishment of a freely-elected democratic government. The resolution also requested the Secretary-Generaled the Secretary-General to continue his discussions with the State Law and Order Restoration council (SLORC). Thus far, the SLORC has not offered to comply with the UNited Nations General Assembly Resolution.
The United States joins other nations in condemning the consistent pattern of human rights violations under the ruling military leadership of Burma. The United States also believes the international community must continue to urge Burma to make progress on democracy and human rights.
The situation in Burma continue to be on the forefront of U.S. human rights concerns. We appreciate learning your views and thank you for your interest and concern.
