Thank you for your letter of 9 january concerning the Australian Government's Myanmar policy.
I share your assessment that Myanmar is now at a critical stage of its political development. I am disappointed that the Government of Myanmar has not responded to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's overtures to commence a meaningful dialogue on the country's political future following her release from house arrest in July last year. I share Aung San Suu Kyi's assessment that dialogue undertaken in the spirit of genuine reconciliation is the manner in which the political aspirations of the people of Myanmar can best be addressed.
Your expression of support for my efforts on Myanmar is appreciated. I assure you that I will continue to work for progress towards democracy and greater respect for human rights in Myanmar.

Thank you for providing me with a copy of your letter to the Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the UN Department of Political Affairs regarding the UN mediations for Burma political disputes. I was very interested to read your letter.
The Coalition believes dialogue elieves dialogue between the Burmese Government and the National League for Democracy is the only way to solve the constitutional impasse.
It is disappointing that the State Law and Order Restoration Council of Burma continues to reject approaches by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy for full involvement of process of drafting a new constitution.
While the international community applauded the release of Aung San Suu Kyi last year, it is clear that this decision in isolation does not guars not guarantee political progress.
It is essential that the Burmese SLORC reconsider its attitude to the constitutional debate and include the NLD and Aung San Suu Kyi in the process of drafting a constitution for the future of all Burmese people.
